I'm patiently waiting for the airbox too. I'm thinking the inlet hose to the turbo will be the issue, if any.

 

I'll know more tomorrow on the intercooler

I would be surprised if they are making 195hp through the same 17-19 intake.

 

I’m pretty sure the intake manifold is the same the part number is the same

 

Intake/airbox is different from previous models and intercooler itself is bigger. Confirmed it with EVO bc I wanted to order the charge tubes to add a BOV and they aren’t compatible

The 2020 airbox is now available. I ordered it today and will report back on fitment once it arrives.

I received the 2020 air box. Much bigger than the 2019 version. I didn't order all the parts at once so I could see what other parts would be needed. As you can see the inlet and outlet are much larger. The box itself is around 120 dollars and it comes with a filter element.

This should be the list of parts you will need. I think some clamps can be used from the original box, but I included them just to make sure I have enverything I will need. I will confirm the final parts list once I have everything installed. So its about 215 total, but it does include a new filter element.

I had wondered if they were going to open th end of the airbox to a larger size knowing it was a severe restriction point to the turbo. I already changed out my air box to a UMP and a big improvement in throttle response and no hesitation.

 

Are these larger boxes on all 2020’s or just the RR (195hp) models?

 

Looking at the parts diagrams, it looks like all 2020 models have the updated airbox.

 

If that is the case there should be a different intake boot from the turbo to box for the smaller turbo on the non-RR models.

 

I didn’t think of that. I’m glad you did so I could make sure! I checked and the part number for the intake boot is the same for both models.
I don’t think the inlet side of the RR turbo is any bigger that the standard model.

I bet the non RR models still get the old shitty intake. That new intake looks like it moves a LOT more air and would likely require re-tuning on older models. Dont know why Can-an would want to do that.

 

So you think it may change the way the MAP sensor reads the air flow? In theory then, the EVO part would require the same re-tuning? I mean if you ran it with K&N filter it moves more air ( at a sacrafice to filtration) it would need re-tuning too, at what point would it matter? If you ran it with no air box in the garage (as a test) would it run leaner? Just asking because I don't have tuning tools to look at air to fuel ratio's and o2 numbers. Not to start a flame war, just in search of answers...

RR turbo has slightly larger internals, but uses the same housing as the R turbo so the turbo inlet diameters are identical.

Turbo RR on the left, turbo R on the right. The opening looks bigger in the picture, but it's not. The inside is just machined out more to fit the slightly larger wheel so it gives the illusion its bigger on the outside. Compressor housing is same part number as you can see.

 

No, there is an O2 in the exhaust to correct the air fuel ratio.

 

You still could be right, the R might still have the old style intake. I am not sure on that. Just wanted to point out the turbo differences.

 

What does this mean to modding the 2020 172hp car? New intake box, new size outlet, same turbo minus compressor wheel. I measured the intercooler and its the same as the 195hp model and different than my buddies 2019 172hp car.

How easy is it to get to 195?

 

Pretty easy to get to 195hp with just a tune. Any Stage 3 tune from one of the reputable tuners here will get you there

 

Any update on if this will fit into a 2017-2019 X3?

 

My parts ship Friday. Can wait.
