Overboost code

I need your help everyone. My buddy has a 2017 xrs and is running the Pwrtune e85 tune. He’s getting the P0234 overboost fault code and goes into limp modea random times. When the problem happens, it’s during hard acceleration and when duning. We‘ve swapped every imaginable parts from my x3 and it’s still there. The clutching is stock and maybe the issues? Also, this may sound like a dumb question but what the starting rod length for the watergate rod? i understand its supped to be at 10 psi crack pressure but where should we start? With the turbo arm closed and then install the rod? I’m thinking we have the waste gate rod adjusted incorrectly. Don’t know but we’re getting frustrated!

The waste gate spring should force the gate closed until there is enough pressure on the diaphragm to open the gate.

Applying pressure to the diaphragm (pushing in the spring) with a pump is what your are doing to set the crack pressure.

Has he been data logging when it happens with the PV3?

The spec for the wastegate adjustment should be on the pwrtune website, the crack pressure sounds a bit high, but I'm not sure.
As far as diagnostic thinking goes, the ECU is getting its MAP reading from the sensor on the intake. Make sure the connector is ok, and fully seated. Also if you have a Dynojet PV3 or similar. Try switching tunes, see if it still does it.

check waist gate solenoid valve , it controls the actuator
look for broken hose connection, does not take much to break the thin barb fitting
and it will cause overboost
you guys need to understand how a boost controller works
the only way for the turbo to make more boost than the actuator spring is by bleeding off boost. so the acuator only sees less than the spring psi or it would open
any time you have a overboost you need to check the reference line any leak will cause overboost..i sugested to check the controller solenoid because I have seen a few broken
yes the actuator could be bad but for x3 the solenoid can be problematic

take the boost reference line from the turbo and put it directly on the actuator
you can not get a overboost in that configuration unless the actuator is broken
that will eliminate the actuator and point at the solenoid or hose on the wrong port

it wont know there is no boost to the solenoid
but you may get the p0299 low boost code

crappy fuel and too much timing is a bad como

did all your pistons have deto damage?

bought pwrtune that uses powervision and you did not feel you needed to check the tune
I get it, but I bet you wont do that again
deto (knock) is usually slow death, one log could have saved your motor

Chris don't assume.....I know a little about this shit as I professionally build Nissan GTRs for a living. I do this shit for a living.

This happened after 2 data logs and about 10 seconds. Car warmed up and immediate data logs performed.........

You don't know the story so do not ASSUME!

I had run the PWRTUNE 20psi e85 tune about a year maybe longer. I would always get a random limp mode during aggressive runs. It was terrible to start when cold and I hated his throttle pedal tables they made it impossible to feather the throttle but it did run good.
I have now moved on to a Whalen speed WS300 setup. I have run about 150 gallons of fuel through it in the eastern Tennessee trails this winter and it starts easier runs cleaner throttle tables are very predictable. Even though I now have over 300 hp it’s more controllable driving fast on tight trails.

Whalen Speed is a good option. I’m sure EVO tunes are as good maybe better but I always try to support the small shops trying to survive.

ok so if you had logs...what happened?
something was way out when the ecu cant correct
was knock control turned off?

Too much timing, Too much wastegate duty cycle, ridiculous crack pressure settings.....etc.

I'm done here but will post more soon under my turbo upgrade thread......I've got my engine all back together with Carrillo parts and installed in the car with a Whalen Tune and moving on........

If for whatever reason you encounter detonation piston damage or worst can occur in a nanosecond which is the reason I run water injection on all of my turbos. IMO there is no better safety precaution and the only downside is another tank to fill. It does require a bullet proof method of delivery.
If tunes were always perfect and nothing could ever go wrong I wouldn't bother but don't expect that any time soon.

the bosch ecu is very good at protecting the motor, but if a tune is so far out the ecu may not be able to cut enough timing to prevent detonation..or if the tuner has the knock control limits set wrong
that is the point for logs...double check for safety...
hell this thread is about how the ecu is protecting the motor from overboost

makes no deference what the boost was because the timing was wrong
I can run 30 psi on e85 and going to try to get close to 40 soon

you would also need to know what actuator and turbo he was using for DS to be relevant
now you guys are assuming stock...I bet not

Are you in Idaho at Saint Anthony?? If so PWRTune does not do any testing at high altitude they just do Dyno runs. We had 8 cars out there last year and 4 of us run PWRTune....All 4 threw boost codes, all while pulling hard. I reset my crack pressure no help....Andy was no help at PWRTune he said it was our cars stating “they run fine in Oregon” anyway When I got home to Washington I reflashed my car and it is fine....Of note we ran our cars all week with the codes and had no issues...I will get a EVO Tune one of these days. I did purchase the Dyno Jet Power Vision I am hoping EVO can load onto that we shall see...The PWRTune runs fine I was just not real happy with the service I recieved almost like Andy did not care, oh well you are in Idaho....Car does run great in Oregon, he just does not do enough real world testing in my opinion for what it is worth.

I'm running the stage 3 AA tune. Mike at AA has great customer service, he answered several emails, weeks after purchase, I had about his tune and his clutch kit I installed. Made me a lot more confident that I made a good purchase.
And his tune has been a very nice boost for my '17 XRS max... much funner to drive now...
