I have an erratic idle and probably unrelated error code of C1316

Hey Guys I bought an OG 2014 Maverick Max XRS about a year ago, she has been ridden hard and minimal maintance. It was probably more appropriate for her to retire but I usually get my self involved in things like this. I have done a bunch of valuable maintance to it over the last year and it is running almost like new. I have two problems that I am at my wits end trying to fix.

The first problem is an erratic idle. I have replaced and inspected everything I can think of trying to diag this issue. What I have done so far.

New Spark Plugs (and checked gap)
New Wires (using Ford 110 degree with Corvette Coil ends, thanks for that info I got on here)
New Coil
New Injectors
New Fuel Lines
Checked Fuel Pressure (> 50psi even on extended rides)
Inspected CPS ( no visual damage)
Inspected Tooth Gear (no visual damage)
Checked resistance from Fuse5 to coils and injectors (normal)
Checked resistance of G to block (normal)
adjusted valves (although this was a first for me I did recheck and it was okay)
New Lambda/o2 sensors (I got these from a 3.8L chevy as they have the same plug on the end and much cheaper, nice little accidental find)

I think tight valves will cause this but I feel good about my adjustment, my only thought is to try to spec them to max
spec.

Second I get code c1316, it shows to be an occurred DTC but does not clear. What does this mean. It states it is coming for the DPS and I don't feel like the DPS does too much when still, I only notice it works when the steering is too free at hiway speeds and I have to turn it down.

I have linked two videos showing the idle both at eco and sport setting

Can you pull the clutch cover off and then let it idle and watch the clutches or even take a video of them? That might help diagnose before you have to take a bunch of stuff apart.

I can't tell if the erratic idle is making the clutches chatter or if the clutches are dragging the engine speed down.

How many miles are on them? Probably a good idea to service them even if it doesn't solve the idle problem.

There is 16500 miles on it.😲 I actually tore down the clutches and specked out everything, everything was within spec, and, in the secondary clutch, the torque gear was broken, other than that everything looked great.

I started the engine with the clutches removed and the erratic idle is still present. I am waiting for a new torque gear and some of that specialty grease for the one way bearing and I will put it back together.

Anyone know what else I am missing?

James

Have you taken it out and beat the snot out of it since you fixed all this stuff? Serious question.

Yeah I have, all those parts that I’ve replaced have been over the past year, I usually give it time to try to figure things out, two of the major issues on this thing was the coil and wires, once I replaced them it ran great but still not where I want it at idle. The only thing I have replaced that has not been really run hard yet is the O2 sensors.
And in transparency the thing runs absolutely perfect right now when not at idle, every now and again it will hiccup once in wide-open throttle over maybe 10 to 15 seconds. But it’s just the idle will not straighten up

Do these have an IAC valve? What does the throttle body use to meter air at idle? Did you clean any carbon or crud or oil from all of the air intake stuff? Also have you put a vacuum gauge on it? I'd be curious to know how much vacuum it has at idle compared to another similar unit.

Overall it's really not bad sounding, could just be how Maverick with a bunch of miles idles.

No there is no IAC on this old unit, it uses a MAP sensor to meter the air. I have swapped the MAP and butterfly (TPS) without any changes as well. I have not cleaned the air intake but I have removed the hose right off the plenum and it did not change anything. I have never checked the vacuum. I looked through the service manual and it does not give vacuum specs.

I appreciate all the ideas @10mm_

I am ready to just ride it, I just wanted to make sure I am not missing something. I am an "old" auto tech (now in healthcare :cautious:) but even in the early 2000s when I left the industry the computers were more robust. FI without much help from the computer is frustrating.

Ya the voltage when running is always above 14V, I have not load tested that battery, should I? I like the idea of continuity testing more ground wires (when I bought the unit I felt like it was a ground issue), I will try that when I decide to tear it down again.

If you changed the components that meter the air and you don't have any vacuum leaks I'm willing to bet that's just how it idles. Could be wear on the cam lobes, or a million other things as you said.

If you can find a similar machine or if someone on here will do it I would still compare the vacuum, but if it runs good it's probably just time to rip it and not pay attention to the idle lol.
I love that!! I just wanted to make sure I did not leave any stone untouched. Time to get it back out and tear up some ground!! Thank you all for the suggestions I really appreciate the help.
