I am trying to buy a 2019 x3 xds, and to be able to afford, i was thinking of just mounting the spare tire on the platform above the engine. I've never seen that done and wondering if there is a reason? Also, is the skid plate worth it? I dont plan on crazy rock crawling but im sure to end up in very rocky terrian.

Thanks all,

the plastic bed is not strong enough to hold a tire. If you look at the bed its supported by the rear ward down bars off the top of the cage, these bars are only connected to the cage with two pop rivits and a very thin piece of metal. The rear of the bed is supported by the rear facia plastic piece which again will not support much weight. You gave to remember a 60# tire strapped to your car and the force it takes while out riding.

folow up ? For you,if its not storg enough for a tire ,then why do so many people load up a cooler, gas cans, tools ect to the bed. The weight of most of that will be more then a spare?

Ok, I looked up tire rack/holder and found these. Does anyone have any experiance with any of these or have reviews? 2 things of concern is strength and if it blocks rear view.

Good news also dealer just confirmed price so I am deffinately buying!

I don't recommend the Dragonfire RacePace Spare Tire Carrier unless you plan on welding the J-bar to the cross bar and adding a gusset there too! The J-bar is held on by six little measly hex bolts THAT NEVER STAY TIGHT!!!!!!. The tire and J-bar came off the machine while we were in the Grand Canyon, luckily the my Three Amigos picked it up and brought it back to the Bar10 ranch for us.

I use the Can-Am Linq rack and was able to find one used at a reduced price. Browse the forum, ask around, check ebay, etc. Not saying the offerings above aren't good, but if cost is the factor, the used market is the best option. The factory accessory in this case works best for me. Congrats on your new ride, everything will be expensive for it.

First off welcome to the forum.
I have the BRP cooler (used it once). Fully loaded I bet it didn't weigh 35 pounds.
Storing fuel above the muffler & hot engine is just a disaster waiting to happen, IMHO.
There are numerous tire mount options available and the cost is pocket change compared to the initial cost of the X3. Only one of many aftermarket goodies you'll want to add to your new ride.
Enjoy.

Seems like you would have to cut that off if you ever wanted to pull the engine?

Yea I have the dragon fire one as well, it sucks and doesn't work. The small bolts can't hold it. They even told me that they never had the j bar break on anyone and sent me a replacement, broke that one again the next ride in no time.

Instead of welding it, I left the j bar in place without the bolts. I reinforced it with 2 ratchet straps to the wheel and the frame, pinning it against the bar.

I’m curious if anyone has an opinion on the other question that the OP asked about the factory skid plate on the XDS? Would it be sufficient on trail riding as well as some rock crawling, or is an upgrade necessary?

This is an Extream Performance rear bumper tire carrier, it supports the rear deck. A few weeks later I installed their cage !
