I have the Max XRS, I think the main differences between the XRS, and DS are the shocks go from 2.0 to 2.5. The added gauge cluster, two tone seats, Beadlock rims. I think that's about it.

 

ohh and QE front diff, but if your that worried about your front diff locking up quick I hear a lot of good things about the Halo Lockers... we ride mainly fast desert here so I prefer the visco over lockers.

 

ohh, and power steering... lol keep forgetting things.

 

All XRS have 2.5 shocks, all non turbo mavericks have 14" of travel all the way around the ds has 15" up front and 16 " in the rear. Id go ds even if it wasn't the turbo version just because of the suspension difference. But id you have the money for the turbo why the torque is great compared to any model any brand. It just keeps pulling up hills its amazing I demoed one if glamis and I will more then likely be upgrading when the 2016's come out.

What are some of the common issues that need to be addressed with these machines? I know every brand has their weak areas, what are the Mavericks weak areas? Clutches? Electrical? Skid plates? Etc...
I have heard the in cab engine heat and noise can be issues for some. But it looks like that is pretty easy to remedy.

Just trying to get an idea of what kind of time and money needs to be spent on aftermarket fixes.

As as far as how I will use my future 4 seater, I pretty much only trail ride in WI. Not a mud guy, and I've never been to the dunes in my life. Never will race, unless it's a drag race for bragging rights. I will guess that my driving manners will be split with family riding( 2 boys under 4 yrs old, pretty slow driving) accounting for approx 50%, and solo or with some buds fast trail riding for the other 50%.

I do plan on driving all of the brands and models I'm interested in before buying, but the Maverick is the one I know the least about. Nobody I know or ride with has one. I have driven a commander, but it's to utility for what I'm looking for.

Yes you must drive one! That should instantly make up your mind.
Weak spots are skid plates for sure, tie rods are the weak link in the steering system but can be beefed up easily. Once you do that though the steering box itself becomes vulnerable to damage. The shock bushings require periodic maintenance too.
XRS models can be found with 12" wheels which are known to keep rocks in and do damage to the inner wheel. I would search out a DS, possibly a turbo, every one just raves about power and comfort. Good luck with your decision

 

I have a 2014 max XRS, I was in the same boat as you , I have a 2 yr old and 4 yr old. I bought it last August and have 900 miles in it all in wisconsin also. Half my miles are aggressive riding with my buddies and other half cruising with the family. I've had zero problems with mine. Our group is a mix of wildcats and rzr 1000 4 seaters. The fit and finish of the can am is much nicer than the others. The rzr 1000 is a bit faster top end but not much. Where you at in WI?

 

I live in between Mad and Mil. But we have a campsite near Antigo and do most of my riding from there.

 

I had a max xrs....spent lots of money and time on mods...clutches, exhaust....etc. picked up a xds turbo max...I still can't get the smile off my face. I wouldn't even consider one with out a turbo.
