this is the Youtube video of guy running x3 in the snow with S&B Particle separator on it. at 9:30 in video starts talking about the separator and showing his filter. He also talks about what the results were with out the S&B in the snow.

 

I have been running my S&B now for two years. All the local shops I talked to said they were all hype! Said they were helicopter tech that would not work and it would starve the car of air!
Well like Luke Skywalker said they were wrong about everything.

Case and point was made again today. My buddy got a 2020 X3 Max at christmas. He has gone to the dunes once and two desert rides. Last ride was just over 80 miles to crown king. I have been with him on each of these rides plus my filter was changed just out of habit this time last year. So I have countless rides on my rig over the last year.

Well I showed him how to put grease on the inside.lip of his filter so it makes a good seal to the air box. When we pulled it out sand from the dunes cam pouring out (outside only). Each tap on holis tire would rain sand everywhere. In addition dust would poof out each time. It was so bad we had to blow it off tust to feel safe putting it back in. How much air flow was he losing with all that sand and dirt caked in his filter.

I had my X3 parked right next to his so we pulled mine out and tapped it on the tier and nothing. No sand, no dust period.

I personally think an S&B should be on of thr first things people add to their rides. Keeps filter clean and my 4 seater beats most two seaters at the sand drags. I have not see it rob my car of air and with a filter that stays super cleaned I don't get reduced performance with a 10%, 20%...50% plugged filter. Plus I don't have to change my filters every couple months like before the S&B.

Just thought I would share, as I am always impressed with how well they work.

Did these geniuses explain why “helicopter tech” wouldn’t work? Air flow is air flow regardless of what it is being used for.

 

We love our S&B, keeps that fine AZ moon dust out! I would put that in a top 10 accessory list of must haves.

 

As a long time Helicopter mechanic that sounds pretty funny. Most helicopters were designed in the 70's or earlier. Alot of them don't have air filters, but rely on similar principles to the S&B 'vortex'.
The wheel is old tech also, but we still use it.

 

The group I ride with (3 X3s and 4 RZRs) all have S&Bs. We don't usually get snow but had several snow rides in the last 6 months with no issues. They are a must have.

 

If I remember right he said it had to do with the air the rotors created??? Combined with forward speed.
I was willing to take the risk and glad I did. All the guys I ride with who know cars and ride a lot all have them.
At this point I have proven to myself that they are worth their weight in gold. Yesterday was just a really good reminder

 

Mine is on now, wish I had it last weekend but it showed up Monday. I haven’t knocked my filter since CK but will be when I belt swap this week. I used Mikes low on the right mount point, I like that I can still see out the back.

can you point me to "mikes low on the right point INSTALLATION"? ?I'm going insane trying to find it...

 

Ran mine with tracks all winter (360 lt’s) Separator works excellent. Filter never got wet, never had to clear or clean anything. Use it for a follow vehicle when we go sledding. 300 miles, 18-36” of snow, iced up and powder, most balls out not a single issue. She looks like a snow storm coming opened up.

Mine is mounted a little different then what they recommend.

 

I bought a used S&B and it didn't have the wiring harness. I cut off the plug and just ran the red wire to accessories and black wire to ground. I put an inline 10A fuse on the red wire. Anyone see a problem with this setup? It's been working fine but I guess I'm wondering why the original wiring harness has a relay tied in?

 

nope, the new units don't even come with a switch and are recommended to run off the accessory wire. They found too many people were forgetting to turn on their PS before riding.

 

Original harness has three wires and a relay. The accessory post activates the relay which turns on the fan. The power for the fan comes through the relay off the positive post. Takes the load off the acc. post.

So what's the con of me running straight off the acc?

 

Probably none as long as you don't have a lot of other things running off of that same post. Could blow the fuse that powers the accessory post if too much draw is put on it.

Didn't put one on my last ride, a '17 X3 DS, and regretted it but it's at the very top of the must do list before I start hammering around the AZ desert. Like someone mentioned it's not beach sand and can get super fine, like talc, and is just looking to crap up your intake, etc. Anyone run one with a pre-filter over their stock filter assembly, I'd think it'd be unnecessary but who knows...?

 

I spent 8 hours ridding in a tight group in fine dust all day long. Took out the filter at the end of the day and it was Crystal clean!! no lie, I and my passages all looked grey covered head to toe in dust.

 

I just installed the S & B particle separator on my 2020 x3. I put on 90 miles yesterday riding with a group of 11 machines in extremely dusty conditions and the air filter looks great. Highly recommend this product!

 

Do you have to deal with more noise once you install it? I've seen hard numbers saying SB adds more db but wondering of real life experience. Is the extra noise really noticeable?

This is my experience as well....

 

I have an S&B particle separator and it works really really good in the Desert and the Dunes! However on all the post I have read regarding the S&B the questions keeps coming up about running them in the snow. So far no one has commented on this questions and I am wondering if no one has used them in the snow yet? is that possible. So if you have used or been with someone who has used them in the snow please give us your feedback.

S&B separates snow just like dust. Your to go.

 

It's not a bad thing to hear it. I heard mine running and not sometimes. So far nothing I can see in the harness I'm thinking it's either the relay/fuse (i never did look at what's inside that little box) or the fan it heat temperamental as we were all near or over heating in the cinders Saturday.

My buddies put different fuses in. But as soon as I'd say "dang it, it's not running' it'd fire back up and stay running. Not vibration or driving it would be running when we cam to a stop and sometimes shut down after a little bit. I'm going to give S&B a call at some point. i've got 2 weeks before riding again, might just get a cage at thet time as well lol

Also both my buddies swear by them in the snow. One popped a fuse on his S&B and the filter was clogged with snow.

 

Just want to point out the technology is sound wiring the S&B is standard as mentioned folks forget to turn it on but the manufacture doesn’t want to rely on the customer failing to hook it up correctly and getting a bad rap

These guys have a big market share in the industrial world

Many applications for use helmets filtration bigger Compressors the trick is figuring the CFM is some math but if Dusty/Sandy environment its always a good idea folks have always seen tractors with the glass particle separators

Very much so! Although they have been around for a very long time. These are passive-filtration. The little fan in the S&B are to substitute the set up using the exhaust as the vortex to remove the fine particle before the face of the filter

We used that same technology to vent the pressure in the crank case of drag race at high RPM I used it in Baja to create vacuum in a catch can in my 1200 cc car using a smog air injection check valve attach to a nipple just above the collector below the stinger, before that always blowing rocker cover gaskets leading to loss of oil and 💣
