Took the shadow out for first rock run this weekend, and was able to do a lot of the 5 star trails on just 35’s in hot springs. Anybody running 4 inch portals and have advice/thoughts on running rocks with them? I’m at either portals or just getting some 35 sticky’s and the SATV transmission gear reduction.

If your serious about doing lots of hard rock crawling then Portals are the only way to go hands down. I run the 6 inch SATV Dual idler 45% gear reduction with currently 39's and 40's arriving hopefully today. Portal gear reduction takes a lot of the stress away from drivetrain where the trans gear reduction has no effect besides lower gearing.

The 4 inch Portals and 30% would be perfect. The 4 inch Portals are not as abusive to the suspension parts as the 6 inch.
Hah I’m not as serious as your build, although epic, it’s out of my budget. Will the 4 in 30% portals run 37’s without too many problems? Or stick with 35’s? I’ve got pretty much everything beefed up ready for portals if I go that route
Definitely get the dual idler.

I haven't hit the rocks seriously yet with my portals, waiting till I get another set of tires but I'm running 6" 45% with 37s and SATV isnt joking when they say it's a total game changer. I've done a few things that I know at the very least would have blown an axle, possibly a diff but it hasn't batted an eye. Beefed everything up to support it but like Supersmith says those 4s are going to be alot less strain on everything than the 6s. Definitely keep everything torqued, you have to be meticulous in your pre ride checks. I had my toe rod bolts back off and lost a DS toe rod on the trail. Pretty much the only thing I'm left wanting for at this point is valving.

If you're thinking of getting them and you think you fit the market which it sounds like you do, I couldn't recommend them more highly.

Make sure you loctite that allen bolt behind the rotor holding the caliber bracket, as its very hard to see and it was sneaky and came loose one day on the trail. Caliber through the wheel is the only time I had to put my spare on while running a MRT tire.

Everything Super has told you is spot on. I like the 4" dual idler with the 30% gear reduction. This may be too low for sand. I also like the EFX 37" Motocrushers on 15" wheels. I would go to a bigger wheel for any tire taller than a 37. Let me know if you need some discounts on getting parts Salty.
