I know, here we go again!!!

So I was at st Anthony for 9 days last week, rained almost entire time again. I had (2) full sets of tires. 30/11/14 10 paddle extremes and Tom's (TIK in forum, he runs them on his X3 DS) full set 28" #2 STU paddles with 3 rib fronts

Extremes: throw sand like crazy, lots of wheel speed, the fronts even buffed do help in 4wd, very fast on top end, decent stability when dunning at high speed, 7" rims all corners, running 9 psi = conclusion, not enough tire for tuned machines, would be perfect on stock machine though

STU 28" #2 : more paddles helped launch harder, not throwing as much sand, more stable while dunning due to being wider, 4wd didn't seem much different, turned better, slower on top end, being shorter was noticeable as that extra ground clearance is needed when coming into dips fast not wanting to plow front end carrying momentum, 8 wide rims front, 10" rear, overall weight was close on fronts, rears were few lbs heavier each, running 9psi = conclusion, molded are less fragile in lave / rocky area, would prefer these in 30" if I was to buy, they dune better when running high speed due to width, would even consider a #1 paddle maybe?

If it's any hint of wet sand, stock 30" tires aired down do better then any paddle, I saw stock machines doing very well while it was slightly wet, as things dried out paddles had advantage

So now I am going to buy a set of 31.5" or 30"stagger rippers and run them on 8" front and back I think, there goes another $2k

Here's a picture of the new 32 Skat next to a 1300 plus sand car tire.

I'd like to think so, but all I've seen is staggered. I don't know if that's the way Tim is doing them all, but I'm sure Warlock will have an answer.
I just ordered through tims wife kelly. Mine were special order 14 ripper staggers. He just stocks what sells and anything else is a special order. People that have started runners staggered can tell the difference and now it's a following. Lol

The stagger has never made any sense to me. To me it seems backwards. It seems you would want more paddle on the side of the tire for the holeshot (more paddle in the sand from a dig) then less paddle in the center (less paddle in the sand as the tire gets taller and skinnier at speed).

Guys I honestly could care less about drag racing or pulling holeshots and I feel that’s the only thing that’s talked about when it comes to sand tires. I’m not entering into the next big dick swinging contest on who can get down the line or out of the hole the fastest. You’re only going to find me racing / pulling holeshots at a mx track on my dirt bike that’s it.
So with that said I’m looking for sand tire set up for the 2018 X3 XDS (2 seater) should be taking delivery any day hopefully. This will be my first SXS that I own, I have rented two seaters and 4 seater Polaris for dunes trips for the past few years so I’m very familiar on handling / my driving style.
For sand dunes I’ll primarily be in Glamis, I still have that racer mentality so I like to ride that edge and push the limits, like to come in the corners hot kicking the ass end out a little and throttling out of the corner, jumping and pounding the whoops. To me in the sand the rougher the nastier the better, I don’t like fresh clean smooth sand… its just boring.

Not that I interested in GMZ sand tires but was reading about their staggered cut tires. Quote: “The stagger cut allows for a little more ability to slide the car around but without affecting flotation or straight-line traction” Is there any truth to this for staged tires and if so would this also apply the Skats Staggered tires ?

The stagger paddle set up takes a little bit out of the tire allowing them to slide easier when cornering.

On a STU tire they can cut paddles to make a 80/20 cut. They take 20% of the paddle off. alternating from outside edge to inside edge of the next paddle.

Other brands are just copying what STU has been doing for years.

Skats are the best and Molded tires suck will be the conclusion 50 pages later.

Too bad the STU set up seem to win at the SXS wars. Lmao!!!!

I like STU tires in general and have ran them on my sand car for years.

I was a firm believer that there wasn't much difference in paddle tires.

Wadmaster AKA " DR scientific data" spent some time measuring the acceleration of both STU and Skat. The Skat was measurable better.

I know I hear the "I don't drag race". Better acceleration is not just for drag racing, while acceleration is not the most important factor for duning, being able to accelerate quicker does factor in to duning.

While I still believe that for the most part, any tire is fine, even "Big Hrons", for the guy who is about performance, even small gains rhe Skat does seem to accelerate slightly better while still duning well.

Just my 2 cents. Tim

and yet he still blew belts. LOL!!!!!

No one will argue the Skats will accelerate quicker to the big end. I just don't like the spongy feeling they have while dunning.

I say go buy whatever fits in your budget and go have fun.

So, since I am from Oregon, and have a XRS. I figured I would put my 2cent in. I have been riding the Oregon dunes since 1985. Not that that maters, but what does is I have run almost every sand tire there is. I choose to run skats based on performance and weight. On my XRS I am running them on stock wheels and have never experienced the so called "pushing" that "Big T Bones" has. Maybe cause I choose to keep my width at 72" or cause my skats are on a 7" rim and are more rounded or cause I run 12psi. Regardless the 30x13x14 8-paddle staggered Rippers and smooth buffs perform awesome. The only thing I would have done different, now that I have it flash, would have went 10 staggered. But as they are they work fine. And the larger thicker Ripper paddles will give me years of use even when I have to occasionally travel the paved or gravel areas to access the dunes.

I'm not much into who's the biggest, baddest, or fastest anymore, maybe I'm getting old. Just love to ride and share my knowledge of the sport with others. We will be staying at Box Car Campground for the next 4 days. If you can make it down, come on by and we will share some notes BigTBones. Would be great to meet and ride with some other Oregon locals!

I'm going to be up that way for a military show and thought we would stop by the Oregon dunes to ride there for the day. For those that go there all the time, should I go to the Winchester access, Coos Bay or the Florence access? I am assuming you cannot connect them without loading up your SxS. I am not into drag racing or running up and down one sand dune. You will rarely find me at Olds in Glamis, but rather you will find me somewhere between Road Runner and The Wall away from the crowds and in the more technical dunes. I don't want to see the same dune twice. Suggestions?
