Paddle comparisons for X3

I know, here we go again!!!

So I was at st Anthony for 9 days last week, rained almost entire time again. I had (2) full sets of tires. 30/11/14 10 paddle extremes and Tom's (TIK in forum, he runs them on his X3 DS) full set 28" #2 STU paddles with 3 rib fronts

Extremes: throw sand like crazy, lots of wheel speed, the fronts even buffed do help in 4wd, very fast on top end, decent stability when dunning at high speed, 7" rims all corners, running 9 psi = conclusion, not enough tire for tuned machines, would be perfect on stock machine though

STU 28" #2 : more paddles helped launch harder, not throwing as much sand, more stable while dunning due to being wider, 4wd didn't seem much different, turned better, slower on top end, being shorter was noticeable as that extra ground clearance is needed when coming into dips fast not wanting to plow front end carrying momentum, 8 wide rims front, 10" rear, overall weight was close on fronts, rears were few lbs heavier each, running 9psi = conclusion, molded are less fragile in lave / rocky area, would prefer these in 30" if I was to buy, they dune better when running high speed due to width, would even consider a #1 paddle maybe?

If it's any hint of wet sand, stock 30" tires aired down do better then any paddle, I saw stock machines doing very well while it was slightly wet, as things dried out paddles had advantage

So now I am going to buy a set of 31.5" or 30"stagger rippers and run them on 8" front and back I think, there goes another $2k

I would stick with the Sandcraft. I have been running them for 2 seasons with no issues. Pretty much everyone in our group in Glamis runs the Sandcraft set up.

The STU Blackbird is not a horrible choice either. Timesic on here runs them. Not sure who sells them these days as Fullerton Sand Sports in no longer in business.

Other issue is we have / get to ride multiple dunes as some of us north guys dune year round.

Glamis, Dumont, Winnemucca, sand mnt nev and St Anthony so far in last 1-year for me. Hopefully sand mnt Utah for Halloween, so we would need a trailer just for tires if we had the best set for each place .

Not sure who here is into boats but props are kinda similar to paddles. You can over prop your boat and it's a slug. Or you can make it hole shot like crazy by under propping. So a happy medium is usually desired depending on what your doing that trip or day also. So when we go up to lake powell and that's higher elevation and usually have more gear on the boat for that trip you need to run less pitch props. Or say we hit the ocean we can go up some in pitch for sea-level running and salt water is also more buoyant so the boats perform better to.
So yes you can use different amounts of blades for diff conditions for sure. But whatever the conditions maybe you still want the lightest set up you can get for the best performance of your car. Common sense really.

IMO 1300s are just more available

#1,625 ·
1300s are wider than blackbirds
and 13plus is almost as tall but wider with smaller paddles

#1,628 ·
11" wide work fine and stay on the rim good for 1300s and blackbirds
12-13" are common for 1300+

I’ve been happy with my Xtreme skats so far. Gotten about 3 years out of them and have run Oregon, Dumont, and Sand Mountain Nv. There really lightweight and very thin but they flat out rip.
Granted this is my first pair of paddles on a SxS But I’ve gotten used to how they handle while out in the Sand.

It's the true size. Fullerton sand sports loved to leave the manufacturer spec size on so when the customer called and asked for a 32" sand tire they got a 32" sand tire lol. But when that customer pulled up next to an Xtreme Tire 32 it would look stupid small and customer would be pissed off and call back to Fullerton and they would fall back on the tire spec on sidewall as there way out, after knowing they screwed the customer. Pretty sad trick.

Sandcraft marks the tires with the rollout measurement. Mine had 101 written on them, which is just over 32".
Skat measures them. When they buff them and they write the RO on sidewall. And sometimes inside the tire.

Never believe the sidewall stamp from the manufacturer as tires generally run smaller than the sidewall spec stamped in it.

Roll out measurements cut all the BS out. Skat will write the RO number and it will say 101+ cause it was just over 101.
Or 95+
So they can also match up and sort the tires for building sets.
Tim always uses the smaller RO tires for the rear so that way the 4wd systems think the fronts are spinning faster and that helps trick the car into staying in 4wd mode.

That might be true for an AWD car with a center diff.
The X3 is either in 2wd or 4wd. It doesn't have to "stay" in 4wd.
You must be thinking about the Smart-lok front diff locking and unlocking based on traction from side to side.
Or maybe you meant 3wd vs 4wd. :D

Holly sh!t, it took me almost 2 weeks to read through all 84 pages of this thread! Learned a lot, thank you all!
But one thing I have noticed there are not much talk about actual blade Name, size, shape. Most responses are like this: I love my extremes, I love my 12 paddle sand crafts. But we need
paddle name and also hp level would be good to know on the machine!
I ran 30” cst on 17 max, good tire for the money, dig too much at start, did pretty good all the way up to 4ri, even with wri x85 they did ok with stock clutch , now with 310+ hp on the max I can’t even get good start, I sit there and bury all 4 tires in the sand lol and after spinning them for 4-6 seconds car gets out and wants to go sideways.
I need to learn more about people experience with paddle blades sizes and shapes!
Leaning towards STU or sandcraft 14 demon blades 32”

The vendors should be excited to go to a place where your free. Lol.
But seriously the AZ show will be awesomene if all the regular vendors don't back out which I feel like they will because they won't want to spend the time and money to travel. But if they all go for it and this deal actually takes off it could be really good for all of the vendors since I do believe that the spectators and off road people will show up in droves. Everyone is tired of being locked up and missing so much in life that they will show up I believe. Ive made the trip to Socal for the show every since the first one. Maybe the Californians can come this way for once. Give them a chance to also check out AZ as a good place to live one day as long as they leave there liberal views in Socal. Haha. Hopefully the show goes on.
