I know, here we go again!!!

So I was at st Anthony for 9 days last week, rained almost entire time again. I had (2) full sets of tires. 30/11/14 10 paddle extremes and Tom's (TIK in forum, he runs them on his X3 DS) full set 28" #2 STU paddles with 3 rib fronts

Extremes: throw sand like crazy, lots of wheel speed, the fronts even buffed do help in 4wd, very fast on top end, decent stability when dunning at high speed, 7" rims all corners, running 9 psi = conclusion, not enough tire for tuned machines, would be perfect on stock machine though

STU 28" #2 : more paddles helped launch harder, not throwing as much sand, more stable while dunning due to being wider, 4wd didn't seem much different, turned better, slower on top end, being shorter was noticeable as that extra ground clearance is needed when coming into dips fast not wanting to plow front end carrying momentum, 8 wide rims front, 10" rear, overall weight was close on fronts, rears were few lbs heavier each, running 9psi = conclusion, molded are less fragile in lave / rocky area, would prefer these in 30" if I was to buy, they dune better when running high speed due to width, would even consider a #1 paddle maybe?

If it's any hint of wet sand, stock 30" tires aired down do better then any paddle, I saw stock machines doing very well while it was slightly wet, as things dried out paddles had advantage

So now I am going to buy a set of 31.5" or 30"stagger rippers and run them on 8" front and back I think, there goes another $2k

Tim talked me out of the Rippers. I ordered 14 paddle 32” extremes. Going with 10 wide rears and 8 wide fronts for now, I have a full set of 7s I can use if I decide to switch. Will have them mounted and in use this weekend.

Guys, Warlock in particular, any negative side effects of running Skat 32" front buffs with Skat 31.5" rear? I want smaller rollout in the rear for gearing purposes.
I used to run a traditional rail with larger/taller front tires to make up for inadequate front suspension travel. Larger tires just rolls over things easier.

Thanks in advance for any opinions/experience.

I got my 32” 14 paddle extremes in and mounted up this week. Unfortunately, the weather turned to crap so we opted out of the dune trip. Low of 22 Friday night and several inches of snow were the forecast, staying home sounded like a lot more fun. I went with 14x10 rears and 14x8 fronts, I love the way it turned out. Definitely anxious to put some sand underneath them ASAP.

Couple inches taller than the tires on the skid steer. Should be really nice having this much clearance for peaks and g outs.

99% of the time, it’s myself, my wife, and our two kids. I’m not a huge guy. My wife is tiny, and my kids are 4 and 6 years old and both of small stature. Our total passenger weight total including me is roughly 400 lbs. Nothing else on the car, no extra armor. Just car seats for the kids and the windshield and a few lights.

Also, so much of our riding is on-off-on, and we don’t really have room to open the machine up enough to utilize the advantage of using a tire of lesser paddle count. I feel like the 14 paddle is perfect. But seat of the pants, belt life, and fun factor will tell the full story.

On a side note, I installed Evo’s lighter arched clutch arms (4) because my RPMs weren’t where I wanted them last dune trip with 30” STI Sand Wedges. It felt lazy and pulled at about 7400 usually. I’ve driven the car enough to know how it usually feels. After installing the arms, I pulled out of the shop, and headed out onto the asphalt road in front of it. Stock 30” Big Horns mounted. I punched it, and held it there. I was sideways for probably 100 feet back and forth, RPMs instantly climbed to 8100-8200. I bet I took off 500 miles of life from the square edges of those tires. The weights def put the clutch in a happier spot.

I’m thinking that between those clutch arms and these tires, it’s going to be a different animal next trip.

What would be a good set up for duning at st. Anthony? My buddy has a stage two tune and wants a setup that’s good for drag racing up like choke cherry and not so much high speed. He has been looking at both the sandblast paddles and a set of 30 12 paddle xtremes. Will the cst be comparative to the xtremes in a drag race or no?

Your theory may be correct if I was running 10 Extreme paddles, but it should prove different when running 10 Ripper paddles. If you have run or even seen a set side by side you would know what I mean. I will definitely let you know how it works out.

when you going to be there testing these? My 14 paddles staggers are solid on Crapo / thunder bottom to top. On choke I launch hard but drag on top a little and the (10) paddle extremes catch me very last second, but that was stage 3. My new stage 5 tune should do much better on both hills, hopefully, if not big turbo will be on its way

Been running the blackbirds Comp cut #2 Sr31 tribute up front with comp cut/reverse shaved. Running cover off this last trip, drove the car harder than i ever have before including hot lapping the race hill. 4.5# of air pressure in all 4. 6 High altitude weights in. I see 8100 in 2wd and 7800-7900 4wd. No blown belts this last trip averaged 120 degrees (highest 140) once again this is with the cover off. Love being able to run 2wd everywhere, 4wd if wanting to play in the steep stuff or doing FAST tight trails/drags etc!

Last trip, cover on, broke 2 belts...saw 180 on average and 210 for highest temp. Obviously too hot.

Love the blackbirds, however If I were to do it again, I would do the STU 1300 PLUS with a desert track up front. Comp cut. LITTLE LIGHTER than my Current setup!

Here is Eric Graves X3. Hopefully he doesn't mind me sharing a picture of his machine. These STU 1300+ Comp cut weigh 21lbs un-mounted. Where as the blackbirds are closer to the 27lb mark. The cups are more of a fan blade, less of a encased cup like the blackbird. The tire has more of a crown like say a skat. A little taller than the 31" blackbirds as well due to them being wider.

Many thanks to all who contributed meaningful information on this thread.

After months of reading paddle tire threads I decided to go with 32" Skat, smoothies and 14 paddle Extreme staggered on 14x8" wheels front and back with Evo 4Ri tune.

Was previously running Big Horns in front and 30" CST 14 paddle in the rear.

In comparison to my previous set up, I was able to use experience to answer two primary questions for me:

1. Would the smoothies give me as much control over my steering as compared to BigHorns? Absolutely. This was my first set of non ribbed smoothies on the front of any sand machine and I was surprised. I don't feel like they sacrificed any steering ability in the dunes. ( I only run 4wd in sand, did not test in 2wd)

2. Since the Extreme paddle height is only a few millimeters taller than CST SandBlast molded paddles, I was worried that I would need Rippers to get the traction I wanted. NO. Extreme paddles are so much stiffer, they provided a noticeable increase in traction. I estimate 40% increase on a scale where 100% would be considered twice as much traction.

I am curious why you do not drive in 2WD in the sand? I ask because in trying both last weekend I found 2WD to be a much better riding experience. Maybe 4WD for drag racing but going through transitions and tight spots in soft sand 4WD just felt wrong to me.

I just went with the Blackbirds comp cut #2 paddle and front Tributes.

They work awesome! I have had the skats, but dead stop acceleration is way more with the new set up.

Front and rears weigh 38 pounds total. Front are not comp cut yet.

I tried my 32" Sandcraft 12 paddle Rippers over Halloween for the first time and I was very happy with them. My only complaint is that you could feel the vibration of the larger paddles hitting the sand, especially in harder packed sand. I did not feel like the car was bogged down at all, in 2wd I could easily spin them and drift. I have a custom intake, exhaust and pwrtune.

I know everyone has their own favorite way to drive their CanAm in the sand?! But some of this talk is very backwards to how we drive our cars in the sand. VeryFast or slow.

Lots of schooling has been going on over the last few weeks during customer dune tuning, dispelling myths about what works best and funnest in the Sand! Lots of new converts now know what they have been missing!!

Again, it’s all about comparing out in the Sand. People just won’t ever know unless someone actually shows them so they can make an educated choice from real experience.

Moto!
