Rotella T6 is an excellent choice. I have been using the Mobil 1 equivalent.

While you are at it, do the rivnut conversion for the skid plate.

I use Rotella T6 Synthetic in everything, it's a great oil. But it's your car, use what you want. If you haven't done it, I would suggest drilling out your skid plate rivets, and installing Rivnuts. Dropping the skid makes the whole oil change process 100% easier, and 100% less messy. If you haven't, well...….. you'll find out.

Oil opinions are many, best use a FULL Synthetic oil such as Amsoil or the others mentioned. Changing your oil & filter frequently is one of the best preventive maintenance tasks you can perform, especially on a high performance engine.

What "weight" oil do you run in your truck / car ? No difference.
A 20 - 50 blend usually will work almost anywhere, just as long as you always let your engine warm up (allowing the oil to reach the top end of your engine) every time you "cold start" your vehicles.

What hurts engines is when individuals just crank the engine until it starts then soon after throw it in gear. See it happen all the time. But if the vehicle has only been sitting for a short period of time, everything important should still be lubricated (did I just contradict myself) ???

Pure synthetic oil is always your best choice.

Read the owners manual and it will tell you what weight oil and how often you should be changing you oil. You want to change your oil more often go for it.

I just get the BRP oil change kit on Rocky Mountain. Comes with the o-rings and new crush washers.

I do the same with the 100% synthetic CanAm oil, o-ring, both crush washers. Cannot beat the price or shipping time.

 

I was going to switch to Amsoil but then watched the you tube video on XPS.

 

Be prepared for the responses to come on how BRP oil is junk. LOL!

I personally have not had any issues with using the BRP oil in my X3. I like the convenience of the oil change kits.

 

Whether its junk or not I dont think anyone can deny its overpriced.

I prefer oils high in zinc (diesel oils). Here is a good read on how little zinc is in BRP oil.

there are two drain plugs and
doubt they make a valve for the small hole
and usually about a 1/2qt comes out the small hole
use Fumoto F104N, Lever clip LC-10
it hangs down very close the the wimpy skid plate

 

a oil pump is the only mess free way to change the oil..and no plugs to play with

 

going to try the curtis valve way first.

 

every jet ski uses a oil pump to remove the dirty oil...hand pump or electric

 

Mine is going off shop air. I didn't know if you could do this with the X3. I can do it with my Audi and all my MBs but you try that with my C7 and it sucks out only a quart at best.

So, if you can do this, what do you do about the 2nd drain hole (small one)? Run it in flood mode to pump the remaining oil out to the main tank and suck on or what?

IIRC, someone mentioned that they had issues because drown mode wasn't mean to do this and that the oil system loses it's prime and somehow has to be reprimed?

 

You are supposed to run another drown mode cycle after refilling oil. I believe the problem comes in when you just use drown mode to empty. After filling run one more drown mode cycle, never had a problem.

 

My manual says remove BOTH plugs. Is there a separate manual advising of 2 drown mode runs, one before the drain and one after?

 

you dont need to drain the oil pumps
that small amout of oil is not a issue
the oem would never recomend draining the oil pumps...just not worth the problems it could cause

One big issue is the oil going all over the skid plates. Maybe use the hole saw to enlarge the hole so it's cleaner?

 

Some people do that, but shouldn't happen with the proper funnel.
