Maverick X MR dead at 28 miles

So I decided to leave Kawasaki and give Can Am a try. I loved my Teryx4 but I wanted something with more power. Enter the new Can Am X MR. I bought a probox top and left it stock otherwise. Well I took her on her first ride this past weekend. It was all smiles until it died at 4.4hrs/28 miles. It just quit while running 10mph. It would turn over and try to run but would not fully fire off. I took it to the dealership Tuesday morning and they tore into it.

Well It turns out that it was a major failure. One of the front cylinder exhaust valves had *2* valve retainers on it! That caused extra stress which broke the valve. Well you know how that ends. The piston hit the valve and drove it back up into the head. Major engine failure with 28 easy miles on it. Initial report is that Can Am wants to put a motor in it. I want them to replace the whole unit with a new one. I don't want a machine that has had an engine put in it and all the engine accessories swapped over on a brand new unit. What if I decide to sell it in the next year and upgrade? Who is going to pay me top dollar for a machine that has had this work done to it? I know if I went and looked at a lightly used unit and was informed of this I would run the other way.

I just don't know what I want to do yet. If they replaced it with a new Maverick, I would give it an honest try. If they put a motor in it however, I may just sell it and go another direction. This sucks. I loved it right up until it took a huge dump on me. When you spend 20k on a toy, you should feel all warm and fuzzy about it! Not be disgusted every time you think about the thing. My first Can Am experience has not been pleasant. I really hope they make it right. I really like the design of the Maverick. Oh well, here is a pick of her after I got it winched on the trailer and home. I didn't even get to get it muddy! I know everyone like pics!

They should replace the whole unit with a brand new one, but you'll turn blue into the face before that happens. That's terrible man. Some at the factory must have been having a shitty day and didn't catch the two retainers on one valve. That really blows man. Good luck with it, hope it turns out in your favor. Just raise hell as much as you possibly can till they make something happen in your favor. Again, good luck buddy.

That sucks I know, but if they put a new motor in you'll be fine. I'd just get all I could out of them. Maybe an extended warranty or some accessories or both.

I agree they should just hand over a whole new machine but I wouldn't have an issue if they put a brand new motor in it. I don't see what the big deal is with a motor swap and what engine accessories are you talking about? These motors don't have belt driven alternators and water pumps etc like automobiles do. They simply unbolt the drive shafts and some wiring and unbolt it from the motor mounts and swap it out. At 28 miles everything else on the machine is practically brand new. You're one of the unlucky ones that got a bad egg so let Can-Am make it right and be on your way.

Side cover, intake, injectors, stator, starter, ect. Plus unplugging and reattaching all the electrical conections and lines. If it had 1000 miles on it I would be fine with just a motor. 28 miles though?! What it comes down to is that, I'm not going to be happy with the machine if it has a new motor put in it. If I have 20k in a toy, I want to feel happy and confident in it. I take RIDICULOUSLY good care of my stuff and this just doesn't sit well with me.

I don't blame you for being disappointed. Couple things, pulling the motor is fairly easy and not much has to be taken apart to get it out. We also don't hear of very many if any engine related problems. Looks like you just lucked out on this one. These things aren't as complex as automobiles so I wouldn't stress about it too much. See if BRP will extend your warranty for you.

I would not worry about them just replacing the motor. I would rather they give me an entire motor versus rebuilding the one you have in it. These are off-road toys and the manufacture is not going to give you a new one, if they just need to replace he motor.

Get it fixed and go have fun!

I would just have the engine swapped. Its not like a car engine where 1000 things come apart and go back in. Simple job here.
I would ask for an accessories package for the trouble they put you in. That is a mistake on their end.

I agree with sand shark. A total engine replacement would be far better than trying to rebuild the old one. All machines have an occasional lemon and I have far more confidence in BRP products than Polaris, and that is coming from someone that owned 7 Polaris products including my 2009 RZR that I just let go with almost 6k miles. The chances of BRP replacing the machine would seem slim, take the new engine and give it a fair chance before you run away. To my mind Polaris is the only real competition and they seem to have far more problems with their XP1000 than Can Am has.

Well I called customer service back since they didn't call me back like they said they would. Turns out when I called Wed, and they told me they were going to escalate the claim for me, nothing was done. They had no record of me calling or my demands. The rep did tell me that a new unit was out of the question(figured that already) and the they would escalate the claim for me, in reference to extending the warranty to 36 months. Hopefully they will follow up this time. This is getting ridiculous.

Man that's tough luck, happens with all machines here and there no matter what brand!! Some just worse than other, its all just luck of the draw who gets it, your just "that guy"!! Not sure if this is an option or not for you, But if you know or have a good attorney, I would have them write a letter. I'm not saying have them get completely involved, just something showing the dealer you mean business and are in contact with a attorney. It may help you get the upper edge on things.

First, sorry about this incident - as someone posted, it is mechanical, and anything can happen - it sucks, but I'm sure they will take care of it and you'll be smiling from ear to ear in no time.
Second, here's the issue, the unit with its VIN has been sold to you, they can't simply take it back and sell it to someone else - things don't work that way. I recall a guy from work buying a new chevy 2500 diesel, thing shit about 10 miles after purchase, they wouldn't take it back, just fixed it and moved on.
I would push for an extended warranty on it and enjoy it.

I have Uverse at the house, had the main box hooked to my TV with tons of shit stored on the HD. It puked - they came out to replace it and I watched the repair man pull out 3 new boxes before he finally got one to work - that old story about them not building things like they used too rings true sometimes - but I believe in the end they will take care of you and you'll love the new Maverick.
Good Luck.

That sucks bad. Warranty work always seems to take forever also. But I would be ok with the engine swap myself. one of my fleet trucks blew a motor a 3,500 miles (5.9cummins) sucked for sure but they swapped in a new engine and we just retired it after 400,000 miles. These things are made by people. Sometimes things slip by quality control or bad materials or any small thing. I've heard that in the late 80's Detroit diesel would make their female employees that assembled fuel pumps and injectors take off work with pay when it was their time of the month. Just to make sure there were no distractions to themselves for quality purposes. Good luck with the claim and don't let this ruin your experience. Break downs happen it's how you get treated after the sale that would make or break it for me.

They wont just give him a new one, They would have to buy his back basically and he would be buying a new one.
Im kinda with the OP, this thing is brand new, if for some reason the guy would have to sell it soon, that would make it extremely hard IMO!!
" FOR SALE!! Like new Can Am Maverick only less than 100 miles, Second engine, must sell!!"
That would seem fishy to any potential buyer!! Plus I'm kinda funny about stuff, every time I would go ride I'd think, what else was assembled wrong on this one!!

You and I think a lot a like! I am going to give it a shot when it gets the new motor. If I have one problem regarding the swap, I am going to sell it and move on. I like the little Wildcat Trails. Maybe I'll buy a couple of them if this Can Am doesn't work out. I truly hope everything goes well with it though. I REALLY liked it for the first 27 miles! LOL!

^It would be an easy sell if they included that extended warranty with it! This whole thing isn't that big of a dramatic deal! Like others have said the engine the swap is apparently a cake job so as long as the OP emphasizes that they do a quality job, or could even comes to the dealership to do a final look-over with them what's the big deal? I'm sure they'll make things right....if not park your mav outside the dealership with a big sign slandering them and you'll be good in no time!

It would not be very difficult to sell at all.

When I am buying a used ATV or SXS one of the first questions asked is has the top end been rebuilt. If the answer is it has a brand new motor and here is the work order, I would be way more comfortable buying it.

As stated above, this really is not that big of a deal.

It sucks that this happened. But that's how it goes. Get the motor replaced and run with it. No big deal. We had the tranny go out on our new $350,000 tractor this spring. Yes it sucks! But new tranny put in (under warrenty) and away we went again. So it happens to all machines.

My maverick was suppose to get a two year extended warranty .But Mydealer marked I didn't want it and pocketed the $500 off the deal..think they did it to a lot of people .All sudden the closed their dealership.Called can am to see how long my warranty was. They said it was out .Told them about I choice the extended warranty. They said its between me and mydealer.Told them their no longer open. They pretty much told me they can't do anything for me and I'm just screwed.Said the deal is between you and dealer when you buy it

I've bought over six new can ams in the past five years. After trying to deal with them and getting no were .My next purchase will be a polaris more dealers around here and they have better service then the can am dealers here in pa..I even talked to a district rep and he said in nice works I'm screwed and nothing they can do.Just try to get ahold of dealer to resolve it.They couldn't get it their no longer their or open. The people I've dealt with on can am warranty side are abunch of unwilling dumb asses that don't want to even try to help you

From what I have read on the various forums the Polaris warranty is not any better.

The only ones that seem to have good luck are wildcat owners

WOW,guys, sounds to me Can AM is treating you GREAT. Nothing wrong with a brand new engine, it wont affect resale. nor dependability ,

Its pretty easy to swap engines, and as a plus, im sure they will look aroung for loose bolts, that the mexican factory missed.

Really , you still have a NEW unit.

They could actually just replace the entire top end of engine.

But they Stepped up, and giving you a complete new engine,

Sorry this happened to you, but nobody or anything is 100% perfect .

Can Am has always treated me VERY WELL and it sounds like they are doing the same for you sir.

Just my 2 cents sorry if different opinions, but i think you will still be very happy with your maverick.
