I have to hand it to the new dealer I'm working with. They have gone out of their way to keep me informed, even on a weekend. So, as it stands, there is an issue that is impacting quite a few new deliveries which are discovered at PDI.

They could not know until a unit is being prepped for delivery. It is not showing in BUDS, which I had no idea what that was until researching it here. BRP is working on a solution but cannot release the effected units until that is remedied. Looking like this should be an ECM update solution and, if not, my dealer was kind enough to offer me the next car and just change the VIN with financing as they had not sent in DMV paperwork as car not delivered.

destroying the wheel,tire and the rod
the nut on the heim joint did not have a cotter pin and just fell off

My 2023 x3 had quite a few bolts/nuts that were loose. Their assembly line has really poor torque controls. I’m not surprised the R has the same issues. All the test mules that were out there were probably hand made and everything checked and re-checked. You won’t get that with a standard unit off the line.

I feel like the best advice you can give any new owner after “no donuts” is check as many bolts/nuts that you can and re-check them after a few hard rides. I found plenty and a few probably would have left me broke down if I hadn’t caught them early. Hopefully I haven’t missed any!

couldn't agree more.. first thing i did when i got my sport max home was check nuts and bolts.. found a couple on the cage that weren't tighted down.. fixed that issue in a matter of a few minutes. Sometimes it's the dealer and sometimes its the factory. This one was obviously the dealer on my end.

 

Yeah this is a great reminder to check all factory connecting points on suspension before ripping it. In the video, it really looked like the nut backed off on radius arm and snapped the cotter pin. I'll be upgrading to stainless retainer clips

 

The cotter pin didn’t break, it was never there. The cotter pin is only to keep the nut from vibrating alll the way off. That pivot point is clearly a ball joint style pivot with a tapered lug. Same as most tie rod ends or drag links.
No need to go to any other kind of retainer.

 

My 22 RR had some bolts that were hand tight…I spent a couple hours and torqued every single nut on my machine. Thank god I did this….I feel like QC is in the gutter no matter which brand after the covid bs. Hard to find people that want to do a quality job.

 

Have BRP and/or Fox come up with a reason for the problems on these R models yet, I was looking at one the other day and don't want to go through a 240 mile round trip to have this happen.

 

Exactly one person on the entire internet has reported this so I'd call your dealer and see what they say about it.

 

Unless there are more reports I would consider it at most an isolated batch delivered to a few nearby dealers.

Maybe, maybe not. But I don’t know a dealer who will deliver a vehicle with an error code popping much less one that the manufacturer declares a safety issue. It’s the dealers issue to resolve, plain and simple.
I’m at the dealer now and they have been hooked up to this connection for an hour. I have the trailer in the parking lot as a measure of optimism.

 

I see people taking delivery of their Smart shock Maverick Rs. My buddy took delivery of his at the Sand Show and had it at Rugged for them to come up with their mounting solution for the radio and intercom.

 

Hopefully they get it sorted out and you get to take it home.

 

Thanks Sand Shark. Unfortunately, today is not the day. BRP has not send out the correct update for the Fox Shox. It did take another update, though. At least I know they have the correct equipment. I'll be back tomorrow.

 

On a side note, I have the time to check all the cotter-pinned points and finally give this booger a look over. I can’t believe the shocks are over a yard long in the rear.
I compared the RR at several points and will say the new steering is much larger. Same with rear CV. Service points are up front and center. That fluids should be a breeze.
only thing I worry about is the coil packs above the intercooler as I don’t think a plug change can occur without removing it.

I'm figuring that out. Like this entire country it seems the forums are in division mode too. It's not like I'm enjoying the situation, then some come in and kick you when you're down. Great 'community'.

Regardless, I love the sport and pretty much all brands so if I can get a decent return on my depreciating car, I will try something new. Looking forward the Kawasaki and cautiously optimistic about the Speed El Diablo. I do think this R will be a car I keep for a long time. I will just keep my experience to myself.

 

Picked up my Az car today, as far as I can tell everything works except the BRP app. I already heard it had issues from test riders. Hopefully they get it figured out. But I’m not banking on it, I already bought a Garmin Tread for car. So let the mods begin now, hopefully will have the car built out by Halloween

I'm trying to pickup an R here in Colo but it's got this shock fault code as well and I can't take the buggy until it's resolved. Dealer acts like it's a simple fix and apparently doesn't know it's wider spread. This is their 1st R so go figure. It's a reputable dealer.

Sorry man, keep in touch. I am proactive on the communication with 3 dealers with the issue. None have received the 2nd update as of close of business today. Ask your dealer if they have the latest BUDS software patch and using MPI3 as they will need that for the next one.

 

Got a lengthy update (rambling) on this situation. Passing it on as it was explained to me.

It's a significant issue for dealers and might effect the delivery schedule for consumer looking to pick one up before Halloween. One dealer in Colorado has 5 units that they cannot deliver. Other dealers are discussing how it impacts their flooring costs, sitting on inventory with no ability to move them. They want a fix first.

It is impacting hundreds of cars and can have implications on deliveries depending on their build phase. As of this moment, there is not a fix. There's a chance they hold cars until they have one. Good news is the manufacture is tackling it from a global perspective. It's an around-the-clock affair.

Personally:
My dealer has a tech who was working with a BRP engineer in Austria. Apparently he's been with them for a couple of decades so BRP is sending patches to him to try out on the Mav I purchased. These are not official patches but troubleshooting code to find the fix. Intriguing to think this car could be part of the solution.

I was there today and watched the tech attempt the latest patch, but it failed. You can see that in the picture if you zoom in.

Obviously, this is the first of a new model year. There will be problems like these. No clue why some have the problem and some do not. The service manager thought it might be possible the unaffected cars were from the first production batch and the affected cars

are part of the 2nd. He is speculating, of course.

Bottom line, two weeks in and no fix as of today. I appreciate that they are working on it at a large-scale. Have to think they'll have it sorted out soon. Otherwise I'll get the non Smart-Shox model and be on my way.

I would think it is prudent to wait for a SS car for the resale value. It seems like the SS cars are going to be more in demand as time goes by and the smart suspension systems become more mainstream.

The DCT is such a game changer though it may not matter for a while.
