Jumping into racing

Hi,

Im Aaron and live in southwest Washington.

I’m about to pull the trigger on a new x3 probably a XRS max but still weighing the options.

My goal is to get into some west coast Baja style stock racing.

I’m looking forward to learning a lot and contributing where I can!

Welcome from Tucson AZ. Racing, the only thing I’ll tell you is it gets very expensive. Whatever you think your budget will be, times it by 5, and still probably won’t be enough. You’ll get a rush, but in the end, the money spent isn’t worth it. And I’ve raced motocross, personal watercraft, even RC trucks. It’s all expensive, but hey when you win you get basically a $10 trophy. Good luck.

Ditto this ^^^^^^^^^
I'm assuming you have a fair amount of mechanical knowledge and skills.
I've raced cars, dragsters, MX, and as well distance Sleddogs (world record and 3rd in toughest long distanace race in the world).
Each basically took a well paid 2nd income to pay for the the fun! Not only challenging if you are competitve that way, but a heck of a lot of fun.
Never a regret!

All my best!

I appreciate that HPn and the insight Hollywood. I’ve never raced before but love to drive every machine I’m on to the limit and need an outlet for that. I don’t need another speeding ticket!

I love the idea of a distance race with diverse conditions without the repetition of a track. I was hoping that stock racing would be “less” expensive but understand I’ll break parts and need to work on the vehicle. I was expecting a 2x or even 3x cost over my expectations but not 5x. I’m not too worried about the travel and fuel costs, just not sure how much I’ll have to put into upgrades and fixes.

My plan now is to wade into the water and have fun. If it’s too expensive I’ll pull back. If I have a blast and can fund it, I’ll double down!

Welcome from Las Vegas. Either way you will have fun in a SXS without even needing to add the racing to it. SXS open up a whole new world to the outdoor fun.

almost sounds like a good weeklong trip out to Glamis might solve the itch you got.. Where are you from?

In a ominous voice - Once you’ve in, you’re in. I mean try it, not that it’s not fun, but there’s all the other stuff. There was a member on here a few years back, maybe even 5+, anyway, just like you, he wanted to try it. First race, another racer basically tore off his entire front end. Bill was over $4500. Next race, something else happened, don’t remember what, but 2 races he was down close to $8K, without blinking an eye.

Another ominous voice, worry about travel, fuel, food, beer, entry fees. Those are budget eaters.

Ha! That’s what I thought. Go get my fix in Glamis. It’s not an easy trip being 600+ miles from me in Nor Cal. I went for the first time last April. I have been back 3 times since and I dream about the next trip. In my opinion, I didn’t get my fix in Glamis, I got hooked on Glamis. Worse than a drug but oh so worth it.

And so many other upgrades with equipment, tools supplies, vehicles etc.... It's truly endless when you "Catch the bug" and it's "In your blood"...

Come down and run with us at Coos Bay....... We'll put you to the test, you will learn some things. Most all of us had some sort of racing or similar expereinces in life.

We've had racers from all around come in and ride in our group where we would literally have to sit and wait for them to catch up. Even LS cars.
Many would just bow out, others shake their heads with a comment to follow like "damn, you guys are crazy fast and don't know how you're able to keep on the trails and dunes without a disaster"....LOL

Properly learning how to reach the full potential out of these platforms is the first key. IMO, I wouldn't recommend starting on a a race track.
I have more fun that way than racing anymore.... cause we can ride the way we want, and many areas of where we want.

I hope to have a good track put in on my 30 acres this year, and I'm going to make it diverse, challenging and extremely fun. Not sure if you ever heard of Washougal MX track but it will be a similar but smaller version set up for UTV/SXS.

Thanks and I’ll take you up on that once I get some hours under my belt! I live close the Washougal track so that’s on my list.

Thanks for all the feedback!
Racing is not fun these days unless you are a trust fund kid.

Go to Glamis.

Good Luck if you try it. 5X the cost is probably accurate.

If you want to make a small fortune racing, just start with a big one.

Another thing to think about “jumping into racing” is are you really that good. I speak from experience. Although I have never really raced, I always “race” with my friends with whatever toys I have had (mtn bikes, dirtbikes, quads etc) and I considered myself pretty fast. I had my X3 for about a year and was pretty familiar with it when I talked my racing buddy into getting one. He had never driven a side by side before but grew up racing karts, dirt bikes and sprint cars. First time behind the wheel of his x3, he straight up smoked me. It changed how I feel about being fast. Now I just think I drive hard. Lol. I used to want to race but now I know I would not be competitive against “racers” that are fast and familiar with their equipment. I also found out by watching my buddy how much harder a really fast guy is on his equipment. He’s always breaking something.

Super helpful! Either way it will be fun. A couple races to try it out and if it doesn’t work no worries.
