Helmet pumpers. S&B vs Rugged

Good Morning.

About to dump some significant money into helmets, comms, and a pumper.

helmet:
Looking at bell forced air, or the impact racing side vent one.

comms:
Rugged 364 intercom box with two in helmet headsets. Will use this with a radio also.

pumper:
Rugged mac air 2 person pump with variable switch. Also eyeballing the S&B version.

I heard the SB has better airflow. Anyone getting dust through theirs into their helmet? how about the rugged pump.

Any feedback appreciated.
any vendors with deals appreciated also

S&b pumper flows more air than Rugged. It also does not have a filter to clean, zero dirt gets through.
BUT the S&B pulls more power and is louder than Rugged. By no means I’d the Rugged quiet either. Both are annoying and need to be properly grounded to not interfere with coms.

another issue is air flow into helmet. I had a Pyrotect side inlet that pushed air into mic and was a pita. I had a Bell Qualifier with top inlet and it didn’t flow enough air for my liking, I had to cut grooves and slots into it to improve the airflow. Now I have a HJC side inlet helmet I got from Parker Pumper all wired up. Then I cut and added the ear cups from PCI for better comfort.

in the end the HJC flows air over my face which I like and I use custom made earplug headphones that plug into helmet.

Don’t forget the Magloc for the hose!! And with a helmet we all should really be wearing a Hans type device. My next research and purchase.

I have a PyroTect Pro Ultra that was custom fitted by Pyrotect. It is a top vent and I have some of the vents inside taped closed because it flows too much air. Pyrotect wired the helmet for in-ear monitors which greatly reduce the sound from the car and from the S&B air pumper. The helmet has thread inserts for a HANS system. FYI, side vents perform poorly at best. Top vents cool your whole head and keep your visor from fogging.

The air pumper is a tough call. I have the S&B and it is a mixed bag. It is big/bulky, draws more amperage than most other systems, and doesn't filter 100%. Other systems don't flow as well, have to mount to a tube but are smaller, draw less amps, and filter better. You don't get a face full of dust from the S&B but the hose does have dust in it. The S&B flows really well though. My 2 seat X3 is a real challenge to fit an S&B intake separator and the pumper. If I were doing it again I'd probably go with SRP.

Both will flow air just fine. As Mega stated the S&B has not filter to clean or get clogged. I have the Rugged set up with the variable controller. Originally I was not a fan of the variable controller as I always wanted max air with my Bell Helmet. I now have an Impact midair helmet that flows a lot more air to my head. I find that I turn down the airflow more. Especially on cool days or night rides.

You can not go wrong with either pumper. I think the more important choice is your helmet and how it flows air.

P.S. - My helmet has the earcups and I like them alot.

I’ve been running the S&B pumper but I am really thinking about switching to the rugged. I run for an extended amount of time behind friends and notice a thick film of fine dust on the inside of my helmet’s face shield and a lot in the inside of the hose. Kinda freaks me out that’s it’s very fine. It also draws tons of amperage causing my radiator fan to run noticeably slower.
