I ordered a 20121 XRS RR. In a dilemma about luggage/spare tire carrier option.
for 600 bucks the adventure rack looks like a do it all choice.
however, it looks ungainly. Have not seen a max with this option in person yet.
is it top heavy?
how much taller the total height is?
does effect turning / handling when loaded? all I am planning to put up there is a 30 inch spare tire, 40 LB tool box, cooler, extra water container
thanks

If I’m not mistaken I think the rack states what the weight limit is and it’s not very much at all. I believe an aftermarket wheel/tire would dang near max it out. On top of that, you’re putting a lot of weight too high up there imo. Dangerous on tighter/faster corners. Take a look at the rear tire mount that sits over the intercooler and swings up so you can reach rear storage when needed. That’s really a great option. I have neither a rack or the spare tire mount for my MAX but am planning to have both before my summer vacation plans start.

The rack weighs almost NOTHING - thin, light steel…lasted 20,000+ miles before cracking.

SEEM I recall it has a 90 pound or so capacity, but I could be mistaken.

Negatives are lack of tie downs, it could be longer, it’s kinda ugly, and it lacks grating to keep crap from falling through, especially on the front.

If you Mount a light bar to the front of it, the crap you put up there will push through and bang on the light bar.

I had the spare wheel up there and it IS a lot of weight to be slinging around - you WILL notice it and it WILL change how you drive, but it’s manageable if that’s what you wanna do - frees up the rear for other things…spare parts, in my case.

I had one and I took it off. It adds a lot of weight to the car and is pretty heavy even when unloaded. We camp/fish a lot and I thought I'd use it a lot more than I do but I really don't have a need for it 99% of the time. Anytime I'd need that much room for cargo and at the speeds carrying that much would dictate, I could find a way to tie something down to the top without using the heavy rack. Maybe if they made it out of aluminum and more low profile, I could live with it unloaded. Now with the price being much more that I paid in 2017, I definitely would not suggest one.

Two questions. Would you happen to have a picture of how you fasten things to the roof without the rack? I want to use it for carrying backpacks for hiking and fishing. Packs probably get to be around fifty pounds. Do you think the rack is needed for attaching this? (would be driving at lower speeds with all the extra weight on top)

Question two: you say if they made it out of Aluminum.... I was under the impression that it is made from Aluminum. What in the world is it made from??

Thanks!

They are heavier than 30 lbs. unloaded, trust me. If you're carrying a lot of extra cargo, I definitely suggest it. Just for the extra weight and how much I actually ended up using it, personally I wouldn't buy it again, knowing what I know after 4 years of owing one. I also have Eibach Stage 2 springs and anyone getting one of these will be replacing stock springs pretty quickly.

Thanks for your feedback.
I am also looking at a Tusk spare carrier. not sure if it will work with the S&B. I am planning to mount the S&B on the top bar since i want to put on the Plexi glass rear window.

You can check out our rack HERE. It will hold an aftermarket wheel up to 35" with something like roto packs. Ours has ez lift shocks so adding the extra weight of the toolbox and cooler with would negate the lift feature. We have a bed rack as well you could use with the tire carrier to hold your toolbox/ cooler underneath it. Check out the Recon Rack HERE.

If you do decided to go this direction, you can use discount code MAVF2020 at checkout. Hope this was helpful!

Forgot to add that the rack and brackets weight a little over 30lbs.

The factory CanAm rack and tire carrier is da bomb. I only carry a gas jug up there, for now, but it coupled with the roll cage is stout af. Expensive stuff, but well designed and very impressive. I also have the CanAm cooler. All those items jell together great just as CanAm planned.

I modified the max rack for my 2018 X3 XMR 2 seater right out of the gate. I carry a 32”spare and I mounted some inexpensive Apache waterproof boxes in the front section accessible from the sides . I don’t recommend keeping heavy items in the boxes on top. Leave the tools and coolers on the back deck.
and yes I’ve had mine on it’s lid once. I honestly believe the rack saved me from cage damage . Rack didn’t fair as well . I replaced it. So .... does it add weight to the top yes . Do things fall through easily yes it would be better designed as more of a basket. But I still love mine . Might add that the shock therapy front sway bar will likely do more to decrease the likelihood hood of a rollover that not having a lightly loaded rack .

I modified the max rack for my 2018XMR turbo R when I purchased it new . I run a spare 32” spare tire and a couple of light cargo boxes for tire repair and belt change items .
Yes I’ve had it on it’s lid once… the factory sway bars especially the front ones had a hell of a lot more to do with my mistake that the rack itself . If your doing slow max articulation the added weight on top wouldn’t be good . For trail riding or desert get the rack and get the sway bars first . Shock therapy center holes work great for me . The storage options are limited wit the X3 . Just my take . Everyone has their own experience and opinions. Take care !
