23’ turbo RR personal build overkill eventually

What’s up guys. After years and years of building everyone else’s prerunners and crawlers and never quite having the time due to customer builds to build something of my own I finally (I held out for a long time from these golf carts) bit the bullet and decided I need my own toy to enjoy so that when I do build my own silverado and Baja bug I’m not out of the fun of actually going out and playing in the desert!
I was really impressed with the out of the box base model and the shitty shocks I can’t do any fine tuning on, but they work pretty good for now.

I will also be using this car as product development so the things you see me build on here may become something I sell eventually. When the time comes I will figure out the vendor situation on here, but for now this is a way for me to keep track of my prototype work.
I have a background in off-road for basically all my life. I was a welder for 6 years to put myself through college. Now I’m a mechanical engineer at my day job and still building rad off-road stuff at night because I love it. Plan to eventually turn this into a full time gig, probably could at this point but I’m not ready for that leap. One day!
Anyways let’s get onto my build. First thing up was junking those stock seat belts and getting some 5-point harnesses I had laying around in the garage installed. I built a nice little bolt in bracket underneath the seat to bolt the anti-sub belt to. After that I got my GG rock lights installed, GG whip, an unknown light bar mounted up, and some lower doors from a buddy who got full doors. I know I am going to build a trunk of some sort to get some more storage for the long rides so I had to get rid of that god awful exhaust system and shed some weight! So I built a Race style exhaust all stainless steel tig welded (purged properly), this may become my first product but there is some changes I want to make first, I’ll prototype the 2nd one on my buddies 20’ xrs.

these small mods are my first step, I am working on getting all the 3d files for the car so I can really get some parts designed. This summer will see a complete chassis stiffening, cage, bumpers, tires, wheels, and a rear trunk area that looks good and gives me tons of storage.

Finally got the car washed up and taken apart up front! Got the front section plated how I want for a nice solid foundation for my shock tower brace setup. Haven’t had a ton of time as I’ve been finishing up a customers Duramax backhalf that takes up my after work time so the can am has been the after work after after work build lol. Need to get it done for Memorial Day though! I will probably get these plates drawn up in cad if there is any interest. Not done yet will be some more plating and possibly welding in double shear plates for the arms instead of bolt on. Is there any reason the arm bolts can’t go in from the front instead of in towards the front of the car? I hate that they go in from the back and the arm has to slide forward to come out. Thinking it’d be better and more efficient for them to come out to the front? Not to mention if they ever come loose less of a chance of it walking out forwards than rearwards. Idk thinking out loud here. What do you guys think?

Well, guys finally got some time to weld up the plate work. Man did I struggle trying to get my welder to run smooth for this shitty 1/16 to 1/8 plate lol. It turned out decent, now I know my settings for the next one and I can get full passes laid down on it instead of having to stop and adjust (I spend most of my time stacking dimes on 3/16 and 1/4, For reference check my welds on this 1/4 structure I built for bolting up my gen y gooseneck hitch to my toy hauler that I am building pictured at the end. Hopefully, get some more time tonight to get the next round of gussets shaped and cut out. I’ve got 9 days to get this thing all gusseted how I want and put back together for a whole day of mountain trails. Hopefully, I can get it done.

The more I see your work the more impressed I am! I want!

I can add you to the list if you want! Only 3 pretty intensive truck builds ahead of you haha. Hoping by the end of summer I will have some products for these that I can stock/sell. Plans for cages, high clearance arms on heims for inner pivots, exhaust, and possibly a trunk system but that will take some fabrication work most likely, not a huge fan of bolt-on as I like my stuff to look like it was supposed to be there not an after thought.
Ok not too far. I'll get in touch in the future. TY

Made some major progress the end of the week and all day today. All gussets done and the upper shock mount structure is done. Now to tie in the 2. The rear arm double shear will be bolt in but I will add some weld washers to give the existing holes some more beef. Funny story, I welded up a bunch of bolt on parts for VKS fab back when I was welding there before I graduated and became a mechanical engineer and the parts never ended up making it to the market before the company was sold. The owner let me grab whatever parts I wanted when I bought all his remaining material. So I will be utilizing those for the rear arm supports as I don’t see a reason to build them again! Saves me time and they look pretty good. I added some weld washers to the LCA one. I’ve also decided to go bolt in on the front section as it will keep it easier to remove the arms in the future. If I weld them in it will make the removal a hassle due to the lack of space with the front diff and what not. Not the end of the world, I’ve added plenty of strength to this front end so it won’t be that bad I don’t think. This things coming out awesome and I’m stoked on it.

Alright guys shock mount is fully tied in and weld washers for the upper arms have been added. Almost time to do a dry fit to add the radiator mount! We’re getting there! I am loving how the shock mount turned out all beefed up.

Is that X pipe going to interfere with mounting your rad fan?

No, My shock brace is actually quite a bit further back than the stock one. If you look, it is basically a flat plate across the front mounting surface of the shocks, whereas the stock protrudes out 3-4" before going across. My main concern is if I am close enough to the radiator mount at this point to not have some big ugly long tabs sticking off the x to catch it :ROFLMAO: We will find out tomorrow. Tonight I will finish up my double shear plate and start mocking up the bumper, radiator, and plastics to see what I need to do about the top mount! Worst case I get really crazy and move the radiator back a bit for more protection. Really don't want to do that but if it has to happen it has to happen.

No pictures of the start of the double shear plate, but I did end my Sunday night with a little door assembly. Probably do the other one late tonight so they will be 100% ready for install when I start putting this thing back together. What do you guys think of the turf on the interior of the door? Little sneak peek of my eventual color scheme. These LSK doors are so badass now that they are all powdered and finished! Can’t wait for them to release their door bag collab with PRP.

This looks like that fake teak foam that is used on boats and watercraft?

Exactly what it is. I cheaped out and went with Amazon stuff because I figured if the dirt/mud didn't get along well it wasn't much of an investment. However, the hydro turf on my jetskis releases dirt and mud pretty easily so I have similar expectations for this. I can tell you it definitely helped with some sound deadening as well. I was after a more finished look and something that felt a little more like an interior and this did all of that. Doors have no ping to them and its kind of cushioned so hopefully you won't see any shoe marks or scratches inside. Looks is a bonus!
That was going to be my next comment about how it will deaden the sounds (adds mass to the panels). Bet it helped a good bit! Looks good, I like it!!
