23’ turbo RR personal build overkill eventually

What’s up guys. After years and years of building everyone else’s prerunners and crawlers and never quite having the time due to customer builds to build something of my own I finally (I held out for a long time from these golf carts) bit the bullet and decided I need my own toy to enjoy so that when I do build my own silverado and Baja bug I’m not out of the fun of actually going out and playing in the desert!
I was really impressed with the out of the box base model and the shitty shocks I can’t do any fine tuning on, but they work pretty good for now.

I will also be using this car as product development so the things you see me build on here may become something I sell eventually. When the time comes I will figure out the vendor situation on here, but for now this is a way for me to keep track of my prototype work.
I have a background in off-road for basically all my life. I was a welder for 6 years to put myself through college. Now I’m a mechanical engineer at my day job and still building rad off-road stuff at night because I love it. Plan to eventually turn this into a full time gig, probably could at this point but I’m not ready for that leap. One day!
Anyways let’s get onto my build. First thing up was junking those stock seat belts and getting some 5-point harnesses I had laying around in the garage installed. I built a nice little bolt in bracket underneath the seat to bolt the anti-sub belt to. After that I got my GG rock lights installed, GG whip, an unknown light bar mounted up, and some lower doors from a buddy who got full doors. I know I am going to build a trunk of some sort to get some more storage for the long rides so I had to get rid of that god awful exhaust system and shed some weight! So I built a Race style exhaust all stainless steel tig welded (purged properly), this may become my first product but there is some changes I want to make first, I’ll prototype the 2nd one on my buddies 20’ xrs.

these small mods are my first step, I am working on getting all the 3d files for the car so I can really get some parts designed. This summer will see a complete chassis stiffening, cage, bumpers, tires, wheels, and a rear trunk area that looks good and gives me tons of storage.

I use that funnel with no issues. Just have to angle it and make sure it is up a little higher.

Nice exhaust.

Welcome looking forward to your build 👍🏼
Plenty of input here regarding the Curtis Oil Drain product and proper filter purging method for X3s. The members are giving it a 5 star rating.
I've never seen those curtis valves before, definitely caught my attention. I will probably pick one of those up

Do read all of the threads, or contact Curtis....a couple '22 X3 owners have mentioned an alignment issue to Curtis, and they are working to solve it. It could possibly affect your '23 also?

I think it being a 23' it is in a slightly different position, I only had about 1/8 of that funnel sticking through the skid and it was already up against the cross member underneath the motor so there was no angling it back more than what I had unfortunately. Easy fix with a bendable funnel used in conjunction with that one tho.

That cross-member seems to be the problem, since the '22 models.

Interesting that the crossmember changed. I have a 21' and it is not an issue with the funnel.

Good news is these cars don't need oil changes that often.
Sounds like 22&23 models have that crossmember issue...Curtis posted they may have, or already do, have a fix.
would luv to see a pic if anyone can get a few.. like where the bars start and end, would like to compare.

Well it looks like fast lab has the correct funnel setup instead of the one I got! It’s kicked up much more in the rear. Also I think I’m going to order up their fan shroud.

unfortunately the wife had a slow tip over on top of a real Rocky Mountain. Luckily the car didn’t want to keep rolling the rest of the way down. I wasn’t there but it sounds like she cranked the wheel a bit too much and did a little panic brake which tipped it to one side and slid a bit then it teetered back and landed on the other side. She managed to smash up the whole front end and Banana the radiator. Just about every piece of plastic took some abuse. So it looks like I have to spend some money now. Oh well. More upgrades haha.

Does anyone have any experience with aftermarket radiators from ebay/amazon for these? I have always had great luck ordering them for dirtbikes and them actually being better at cooling than OEM, so I am curious to see if it is the same situation for these? $135 seems enticing, especially since I can go through and clean up any welds if I wanted. I can get 2 for the price of one OEM. Also, the plastics are pretty misaligned in the door area, from what I can tell the entire front end is plastic mounted so once I replace those I should be good. Is there anywhere specific I need to check that could be tweaked? The only thing I can think of is maybe the bulkhead area, as this tip-over was under 5mph, but I have heard some horror stories about these cars!
However before Saturdays afternoon carnage we did get to enjoy the car Thursday-sat morning and I was able to finally grab some decent sound clips of the exhaust. It is loud no doubt but sounds so good under load. Might get annoying up in the mountains but going fast it doesn’t bother me at all.
Do video clips have to be linked to third party?

OOOFFAA, On the bright side, in that side pic the headlight didn't break!

She is ok I assume?
Yes she is ok other than a bruise on her leg from bumping the steering wheel!

If I remember right it got away with zero scratches on the headlights. Ill know more when I tear into it this week and hopefully get some parts ordered. I guess since I'll have the front end off the car I will also be doing the shock tower brace and gusset kit. I plan to weld everything in. No bolt-on stuff for me.

Well guys, I have ordered all of my replacement plastics and I've gone ahead and ordered the new LSK doors. They have such a unique look compared to everyone else I had to have them. Stay tuned, I'll have the car back at the house in the garage in the next week or so to begin the tear down process. I am going to brace the front of the car entirely weld in stuff, I'm just not a fan of bolting stuff in. With that being said I decided to pass on the fast lab fan shroud and go with a plastic one still, since I will be eliminating all the flex of the front end with my bracing. Looks like the build is starting a bit earlier than I expected haha.

Well that was quick. And LSK knows how to pack a product for shipping. Some other companies I won’t name should take note. Every item was individually wrapped and then placed in with a ton of scrunch paper to keep everything nice and protected.
