I second the part about stopping take it from an old truck driver being able to stop is the most important part. this is why I always drive a 3/4 ton pick up that has bigger brakes. So I have the ability to stop in an emergency. good luck

Welcome Mark , I had a 1500 , great little truck , it does have the power to tow at 10k but as everyone said , not safely ! I used to haul my 32ft sandstorm it was at 10k , the truck had the power but lacked in weight , wind or semi,s passing becomes scary, and it got terrible mileage , I could only go about 150 miles on a tank if that, and I also had air bags, which is a must. I got a great deal in April when Ram was selling off their 3500, s on my trade in I picked it up for 11k in difference. April is a good time to buy a 2019 wait till they mark them down. You will need a bigger truck. My 3500 is so nice to tow with , the Cummins 6.7 turbo, and still get 10 to 12 mpg . good luck

Hi Mark, I feel your pain. I bought my Can-Am X.3 when I had it paid off 2016 1/2 ton Chevy Silverado. I rented the lightest “1/2 ton towable” toy hauler that would fit my new x3. That was all it took. My truck could do it but it wasn’t fun, sometimes it seems as if the tail was wagging the dog. Especially going down grades. I went and bought a 2018 Silverado Duramax. And I’m very happy with the decision. I was able to buy a lot more trailer. And be a lot more comfortable driving, and while out and about in my larger trailer.

    Build one?

You may need to get creative for a half ton truck.
I started with an 18-ft insulated aluminum trailer with a 4-ft nose.
X3 in the back. Bed, kitchen, commode and shower in the nose. Seating is a pair of front bucket seats out of a Honda Accord. Heat, air, sink, toilet, shower, water heater, microwave, fridge, tv, coffeemaker. Small but it does the job.
Its 6900 lbs fully loaded. The F150 is rated at 12,000 so it handles the trailer pretty easily.
So far about 15,000 miles on the trailer in the last two years - four times across the Rockies with no "oh shit" moments.
Aluma trailer was $9k plus what I added to finish it.
