Burnett Wins SCORE Championship with Maverick

Nov 19, 2014 - 4:38 PM - by NickJ

Can-Am Side-By-Side Pilot Cory Sappington Third At 2014 Baja 1000

Valcourt, Québec, November, 19, 2014 – Can-Am® Maverick™ side-by-side racers competed at the 2014 Tecate SCORE International Baja 1000 race on the Baja Peninsula, tallying one Class 19 podium and the overall season championship. Racing solo, Marc Burnett (Burnett Motorsports / Can-Am) finished the endurance race in sixth to secure BRP / Can-Am its the first ever SCORE Baja 1000 season class side-by-side title. The Desert Toyz / Can-Am team of Cory Sappington also had a solid race, earning a third-place podium finish at this year’s gruelling 1,275-mile race held in Mexico.

“We were impressed with effort put forth by all our teams, but especially Marc Burnett, who not only won the SCORE Class 19 championship with his Monster Maverick, but also completed the entire 2014 Baja 1000 ironman. With two wins on the year and then this final outstanding effort, he deserves a lot of credit for finishing strong,” said Jeff Leclerc, Racing Project Leader, Can-Am. “We were absolutely thrilled to see Cory Sappington’s Desert Toyz Can-Am Maverick earn a prestigious Baja 1000 podium spot with such a difficult course.”

The 2014 Tecate SCORE Baja 1000 featured a challenging course that snaked its way through the rugged desert and hit both coasts on the Baja Peninsula, winding 1,275 miles from Ensenada to La Paz, Baja California, Mexico. Nineteen side-by-sides entered Class 19, but only eight finished in the allotted time.

Can-Am Maverick 1000R pilot Marc Burnett (Burnett Motorsports / Can-Am / Monster) came into the most prestigious SCORE race with the Class 19 points lead, having won both the Baja 500 and San Felipe 250. By simply finishing the extended Baja 1000 course, Burnett could wrap up his first career side-by-side championship for himself and Can-Am. However, he also decided to compete the Baja solo (ironman), driving more than 1,200 miles alone.

The No. 1917 team of Murray Racing / Can-Am / ITP was also in the running for the overall title, having reached the podium at the series opener and posting a win earlier in the year at the Imperial Valley 250. The final Can-Am team consisted of the No. 1904 Desert Toyz / Can-Am Maverick of Cory Sappington, who came into Baja fourth in the class standings.

Burnett battled the entire race, competing much of it in the top five and at one point (San Ignacio region) held the lead in his No. 1904 Maverick. Baja is as much about luck and mechanical survival as it is skill and horsepower. Burnett, like many teams, was faced with issues he had to overcome, from extreme fatigue to navigational challenges to both scheduled... [Read More]

A Romp in the Sandbox: The Can-Am Maverick X ds 1000R Turbo Review

Nov 06, 2014 - 4:32 PM - by NickJ

The sandbox... it's a special place in most people’s memories where we first played with toy cars and trucks. It's where we first made engine noises and rocketed our toys up and over the sand mounds propelled by mouth-powered jet thrusters, as if those mounds were mountains hundreds of feet tall. It was a sandy landscape of freedom and imagination...

October 21, 2014 – Noon. After what seems like a long day of travel, our bus pulls up to the General Store at Glamis, CA. The early morning and long miles fall away, as our eyes light up to the sight of a camp site encircled with campers, like that of the wagons in an old western. This encampment features a semi-truck and trailer wrapped with the image of a side-by-side throwing the sand of some unnamed dune skyward and the words "Can-Am Maverick." Lined up in the middle of the RV camp is a long row of Can-Am’s newest halo vehicle. Manta Green cages glinting in the noontime sunlight against the dark body panels, while the Maverick X ds 1000R Turbo waits for us. Today is going to be a good day.

Right off the bat, it’s apparent that Can-Am spent a considerable amount of time with designers to put together a color scheme that is not only unique, but also screams, “The Maverick is here!” The Manta Green paint extends from the cage, to the suspension components, to the beadlock rings on the rims. The striking paint and graphics pop off of the Carbon Black body panels with a vibrance not often seen in the surroundings that this off-road machine will call home. This green and black color combination doesn’t stop on the outside either. It continues to flow down into the futuristic looking seats and helps tie the entire visual design together. A discerning eye realizes that this new Side by Side isn’t built like the rest. There is an unfamiliar protrusion nestled between the seats. There are two angular vents gaping open ready to direct air through a metallic heat exchanger. If you’re guessing "intercooler" then you would be right. This new Maverick not only packs a 1000 cc Rotax engine, but it is also force fed by a Mitsubishi turbocharger! Hallelujah! Ladies... [Read More]
